Illuminating Stockport: TLC Festive Project Brightens The Community

Posted On: 22 Dec 2023

As the holiday season unfolds, you have no doubt been admiring the twinkling trees and lights across Stockport. Once again, this year our Street Lighting and ground maintenance teams have worked tirelessly to create a magical atmosphere by installing a variety of enchanting displays, bringing joy and warmth to communities across the borough.

Enchanting Displays:

The heart of the project lies in the installation of 453 LED Christmas motifs on lighting columns, bringing streets to life with festive cheer. Additionally 40 cut Christmas trees and 2 cribs have been beautifully illuminated, casting a warm glow across the neighbourhoods.

Community Collaboration:

At TLC, we believe in the power of collaboration and this year’s festivities are no exception. The installation of these vibrant displays is a joint effort between our street lighting and grounds maintenance teams. This synergy ensures that each tree is not only beautifully adorned but also situated with care and precision.

Special Traditions:

One cherished tradition at TLC involves illuminating the tree that stands proud outside St Ann’s Hospice. This yearly gesture exemplifies our commitment to giving back to the community and spreading the festive spirit to those who need it most. Matthew Munro and Andy Downes from our Street Lighting team used their festive spirit to light up the tree one chilly morning.

Local Festivities:

In addition to our street installations, TLC’s team is actively involved in performing the light switch-ons, giving them the privilege of beginning Stockport’s Christmas festivities. We love how these events bring the community together, fostering a sense of joy and unity.

Community Feedback:

The true measure of our success is the joy we bring to the community. We are delighted to share some heart-warming comments from community members:

Caroline Simpson expressed her gratitude, praising the beauty of the Christmas trees in Mersey Square, Bramhall, Edgeley, and Marple.

Councillor Hunter commended the quality of trees and village lights in Cheadle Hulme, expressing happiness with the tree’s appearance and acknowledging our employees for their excellent work during the switch-on.

Inge Challinor from SMBC praised the tree on Castle Street, emphasizing the positive impact of the light switch-on, with quite a few people expressing how amazing the light switch on was and how much it means to have this on the street.

Darren Flannery, District Centre Manager at Stockport Council described the lights switch-on in Reddish as a “huge success,” with the local community expressing nothing but positivity about the tree and lights in the square.
