At Totally Local Company our dedication to the community of Stockport goes beyond providing essential services; it extends to embracing the seasonal changes and contributing to environmental sustainability. As we recently transitioned from warm days of summer to the vibrant hues of autumn and the crisp days of winter, our Streetcare and Parks teams embark on a crucial mission – leafing.

The leafing season kicked off at the end of October and continues diligently through to the back end of January. During this period our teams work tirelessly to remove fallen autumn and winter leaves from Stockport’s parks and public highways. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of our community spaces but also plays a vital role in maintaining a clean and safe environment for all.

Did you know that leaves help maintain soil chemistry which dictates which plants can grow and in turn, what creatures will thrive there – a critical element to ecosystem balance and health?

So it only makes sense that one unique aspect of our leafing initiative is our collaboration with local allotment users across the borough. We actively seek input from these community members to understand if they have any need for leaves that can be used as compost. As we traverse the borough, engaged in the meticulous task of leaf removal, we make it a point to dispose of our clean leaves at these allotments whenever possible.

This collaborative effort serves a dual purpose – not only does it contribute to the beautification of our parks and public spaces, but it also nurtures a sustainable cycle within the community. By recycling around 1000 tonnes of leaves over the course of the season, we play a significant role in minimizing waste and promoting environmental responsibility.

This commitment to recycling aligns with TLC’s broader mission to reduce our environmental impact and foster a sense of shared responsibility for our surroundings.

As we reflect on the leafing season, it’s not just about the physical task of removing leaves; it’s about fostering connections within Stockport and contributing to a cleaner, greener and more sustainable community.
